Hi Family!
Here are a few (okay, a lot)
pictures from our weekend.
It was so great to be up north!
We never made it up the north shore a single time last summer.
We hadn't been to the cabin for two and a half years!
Waaaay too long.
We originally were planning to go up just for the day,
to spread Ted's ashes.
That's what he asked for and what
Grandma Haggen wanted.
Grandma Haggen wanted.
Then Grandma K was going to the cabin with Annie on Friday and Annie had to bail.
And Sam said let's go for the weekend.
It seemed as though all things were coming together.
So I left Friday morning to drive up with Grandma K.
We had lunch at Subway in Mora, and stopped in Duquette
to pick up a couple of things.
We got there, cleaned, and hauled stuff in.
It was pretty dirty and musty because it had been sitting all winter.
After a bite of dinner we wrestled the rain barrels down and
took them one at a time over to Marty's to scrub them out.
EeeeeW!
They were full of mold slime and stunk to high heaven.
I was really glad to get that done and wished mightily for a shower.
Dad and Sam came up after school and work and got there about 9:30.
We were all tired so we just unloaded and went to bed.
On Saturday we were supposed to meet Grandma H and Ann and Joe
and Bekkah in Duluth.
We had to stop at the Veteran's memorial on the way up, of course.
We sang For The Beauty of the Earth in the circle.
They were running late so we got to go to Canal Park and walk
out on the pier. It was super foggy, chilly, and gorgeous!
The bridge looks so cool in the fog.
We went to Duluth Pac and looked around.
We also had time time to go to The Rocky Mountain chocolate Factory.
Yum!
Then it was time to meet the family.
We stopped at Blackwoods Grill for lunch, then headed to Gooseberry Falls.
Grandma decided she wanted to try to find a place where
there weren't people to spread Ted's ashes.
We found a place near a picnic area where no one was around,
both for privacy and also because we weren't
sure of the legality of what we were doing.
It was so cold!
The wind was just whipping.
We had a prayer and Dad spread the ashes.
I thought it was really fitting that someone had built a
rock cairn right where we were.
And this is Ted's resting place.
And then Dad said, "I just threw my brother in the lake!"
And everyone laughed.
Sammy did a little climbing.
Bekkah couldn't because she has a broken foot.
Some bozo hit her with his truck while she was biking.
And drove away.
Rude!
Awesome, awesome birch tree.
Grandma wanted a picture with everyone, so we grabbed a
family that was walking past.
Then we went over to the more populous falls area.
Man it was boiling through there.
High water!
I suppose it is earlier in the season that when
I am usually there.
| It's hard to get a picture here without photo bombers. It's a hopping place |
Everyone else needed to head back to the city, but we spent
a little more time stopping at pretty places along the lake.
The water was such a pretty color of green!
I wish I could have captured it with my camera.
I will have to do some research on how to do that.
Sam was practicing his "take over the world" pose.
I was really digging this bright yellow lichen all over the rocks.
It was seriously so cold!
The wind felt wintery.
We stopped at a river and hiked a tiny bit.
It was a salmon spawning area and very cool.
This is the view towards the lake from the dam area.
I thought it was really pretty where the lake and the river met.
The waves were big.
I was picking rocks and a rogue wave got me and soaked my feet.
Good thing we were almost ready to head back.
We did a little cleaning in the yard and then had a bonfire for supper.
Sorry I forgot to take pictures of that.
I assure you it was delicious.
It stormed and rained most of Saturday night.
We got up to a cool, foggy, drippy morning.
And it was beautiful.
We took a walk down the driveway.
Remember this?
I could practically hear the echoes of you
all singing and laughing.
We packed, cleaned and headed out.
We made a quick stop at Holyoke, but it was
pouring and my camera batteries were dying.
The water was crazy high there too.
There swimming pool was almost non existent.
This is the swimming area from above.
When we drove past the sometime-waterfall by
the Kettle River it was shooting out.
I think it was the most water I have seen there.
It was so cool.
My camera batteries were too far gone to get pictures.
I tried really hard and they said no.
Anyway, it was a great getaway from real life.
I really want to get to these places as a family in August, if we can.
I hope you all had a lovely weekend too
Love you!
Mom
